Chelsea FC manager Jose Mourinho spoke to reporters this afternoon ahead of tomorrow’s opening fixture in the Premier League against Swansea City at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea FC look to defend their crown as champions of England by opening to a flying start.

With the summer transfer window still open, questions about possible roster changes still filled the press conference as they had all summer. With the departure of Filipe Luis to Atletico Madrid, Mourinho is in need of a left-back to cover for Cesar Azpilicueta. According to the Chelsea FC official site, he is well aware.

The player affectionately named “Dave” is a solid enough option, but with minor slip ups in the preseason as well as the Community Shield match with Arsenal, the Chelsea board is well aware depth at the back-four will be crucial to another Premier League title.

Diego Costa has re-injured his hamstring, for what seems to be the 20th time since his arrival at Stamford Bridge. The most recent flare-up came in the Chelsea FC preseason win over Barcelona in Washington, DC. “Obviously Diego’s a top striker and everybody wants top strikers. He’s such an important player for us not just for the goals he scores but also for the football he produces and the mentality he helps create in the team,” said the manager.

Losing Diego Costa for the long-term would be costly to Chelsea FC this season. It would make life extremely difficult to fight on all fronts and win as many trophies as possible with a limited Diego Costa, or without the striker at all.

Last season Chelsea blew the doors off the league and stormed to a title-winning season before Arsene Wenger could raise the white flag of surrender. This was largely due to last season’s leading scorer for the club, Diego Costa.

Surely, the Blues have other options. “I have Loic Remy and Falcao and I will go with them like I have done in other matches; and like I did last season many times with Remy and [Didier] Drogba. Three is the perfect number, and we have three. Obviously Diego’s a top striker and everybody wants top strikers. He’s such an important player for us not just for the goals he scores but also for the football he produces and the mentality he helps create in the team,” said the Chelsea boss.

With that said, I would not be surprised if we had to wait until the next home game to hear shouts of “Diego!” from the Shed End. Most football fans would agree that there is a significant drop-off from a healthy Diego Costa, to a slightly inured Diego Costa. There is an even larger gap from any form of Diego Costa to Remy and Falcao.

The promise of silverware is in the air in SW6 at the genesis of a new campaign. The Champion’s League is an elusive trophy to Mourinho as Blues manager, and he will look to advance past the semi-final round this season. “Let’s try to be a good team, and let’s try to be here in March and April speaking to you about the possibility of winning something.” I can agree with those marching orders from Mourinho. The goal is simple. Chelsea must continue to win matches, get the best out of their players, and add to the trophy cabinet at Stamford Bridge.
