Abdul Baba Rahman: Michael Essien Helped Me Come To Chelsea FC
New Chelsea FC signing Abdul Baba Rahman has revealed that Michael Essien played a part in his move
Chelsea FC finally confirmed the arrival of Abdul Baba Rahman on Sunday, minutes after the Blues were thrashed 3-0 by Manchester City. Nevertheless, after joining up with his new team, the Ghanaian revealed that he sought advice from a Chelsea legend in Michael Essien before moving.

Baba Rahman represents a much needed reinforcement in the Chelsea backline, and the left-back linked up with the squad on Tuesday to begin training at Cobham. While he was getting used to his surroundings, he sat down with chelseafc.com to TALK WORDS. FIRST WORDS. In the process he revealed who helped him decide that Stamford Bridge was the right place for the next chapter in his career.
"You’re the third Ghanaian to sign for the club following Michael Essien and Christian Atsu. Did you speak to either of them prior to the move?Yes, I spoke with both of them and they were very positive about Chelsea. They told me it was a great club with very nice people, which was good to hear."
The best bit about this is being reminded that Michael Essien still cherishes his time in West London. He was a great servant and in fact signed for the club exactly 10 years and 1 day ago (we put together a nice little commemoration for it). Now, he has played a part in helping Chelsea land what had rapidly become a desperately-needed signing.
The midfielder even took to Twitter to share his good wishes for his fellow Ghanaian.
This is just great news all around really. Legends interacting with the current crop and most importantly, Baba Rahman is finally a Blues player. I was literally crying having to write about him every single morning in our daily rumour round-ups, and now I don’t have to.
He is indeed a welcome addition to the squad as Chelsea have been pretty awful so far this season. While the attack have at times have looked *alright*, the defence has been shambolic. A sentiment perhaps neatly summed by Thibaut Courtois being sent off in the 2-2 draw with Swansea.
Furthermore, John Terry was substituted by Jose Mourinho for the first time against Manchester City and Branislav Ivanovic has looked terrible against everyone. With Baba Rahman now on Chelsea’s books, he will hopefully transform the defence from Kinder Bueno soft-centred nonsense into a frozen Galaxy bar. (Other chocolates are available.)
“What else did the fella say?” I hear you ask. Well, apart from the customary I’m so happy to be here stuff, he talked about his playing style and versatility.
"I’m a left-back and, as a defender, it’s important for me to be strong in the tackle, which I always try to be. I also like to get forward as much as possible and help the team in attack…I can play as a winger but I haven’t played in midfield for a while. I played on the left wing in Germany for Greuther Furth not so long ago and scored two goals in the game, but the next day I left for Augsburg."
Being able to fill multiple positions is definitely a good quality to have, while his desire to be strong in the tackle is exactly what this uncertain Chelsea defence needs. If you’re not quite sure as to where I am coming from, just think back to City’s first goal on Sunday, where Sergio Aguero managed to get a shot off in the middle of four Blues players.
