The 18-year-old joined the Blues around seven years ago, and has been working his way up through the youth ranks since. He has been an important part of the club’s academy successes in recent years and helped Chelsea lift the FA Youth Cup and UEFA Youth League last season.

Boga has made over 100 appearances at various Chelsea youth levels in the last four campaigns, and will now head to Ligue 1 in his first loan deal. The attacking midfielder will look to take his skills to the French top flight and assist Rennes in improving on their 9th place finish last season.

The Frenchman will spend the entire season on loan, and will hopefully be able to get meaningful regular playing time over the course of the campaign.

This is undoubtedly a smart move for all parties involved. Having been an integral part of the Stamford Bridge youth set-up, Boga needs to step-up in quality this year. Evidently, he is not developed enough to feature for the Chelsea senior team, thus the move across the Channel should provide him with a sufficient challenge that will help him take the next step in his career.

Boga becomes the 27th Chelsea player out on loan this season. The Chelsea loan machine is notoriously ruthless, and the Frenchman has become its latest victim. Having said that, this is one of the situations in which a deal is beneficial. The issue now will be whether he shows enough worth to Rennes boss Philippe Montanier to warrant game time.

Being sent out on loan is not a guarantee of regular football. The player must prove that he will add to the team when on the field. Josh McEachran is one of those players who for some reason or another did not get playing time when out on loan, and his career plunged as a result.

Given how highly Chelsea staff rate Boga, he should have no issues demonstrating his quality in France. However, McEachran was touted as the next Frank Lampard yet he still struggled. Now, it is unlikely that the Englishman failed to put in enough effort but Boga should ensure that he does everything in his power to prevent Montanier having a reason to not play him.
