Chelsea FC Reveal Model For Stamford Bridge Renovations

A model of the new Stamford Bridge has been unveiled by Chelsea FC

Chelsea FC have revealed a 1/200 scale model of the upcoming renovations to Stamford Bridge and the reviews of the proposed changes so far have been excellent. In the midst of all the transfer madness, the Blues presented their model and the majority of fans are in favor of the new look of the stadium.

As the tweet above shows, there are always critics. The new ground is set to seat 60,000 fans, a huge upgrade from the stadium’s current capacity of just 41,798, making it one of the smaller stadiums among the big clubs in England. In contrast, the Emirates Stadium seats 60,000, Old Trafford seats 75,000, and the Etihad Stadium seats 53,000. To keep pace with the financial muscle of clubs like Manchester City and Arsenal, the Blues must upgrade their stadium to increase their matchday revenue and the plans to do so are in motion.

The renovations are expected to take three years to complete starting in 2017 and will cost roughly £500m, which will be paid by Chelsea FC’s billionaire owner Roman Abramovich. Wembley Stadium is being touted as a temporary home for the Blues while the renovations are taking place and the FA has agreed in principle to the deal. We have covered in the past why Wembley would not be an ideal fit because of the sheer size of the stadium and the fact that Chelsea can only use 50,000 of the 100,000 available seats but there are not many other options at this time.

Talk of a new stadium or stadium renovations will do little to quell the unrest among Chelsea FC fans right now who worry about what it means for the club’s immediate future. Arsenal struggled to make any impact in the transfer market as they were forced to settle for bargain deals while paying off their shiny new Emirates Stadium. Chelsea fans fear that the Blues will suffer through the same fate while the renovations are taking place.

Rumored big money moves for John Stones and Paul Pogba have fallen through and Chelsea have indeed made a bargain signing in £3m defender Papy Djilobodji. There is a bright side however for Chelsea fans as they can look out at the vast loan army the Blues have, 29 at last count, and know that selling half of those players could take a big chunk off the price tag of the stadium. The next four or five years will be interesting to say the least as the club’s fans will be even more obsessed with the club’s finances than they already have been.
