Chelsea FC: Eden Hazard Discusses Benching, Poor Form

Eden Hazard has spoken of his poor form this season and Jose Mourinho’s decision to bench him.

Chelsea FC have endured a terrible a start to the season, accumulating just eight points in eight games. While some tactics have been called into question, the performances of the players have been the real issue. This is especially true with regard to Eden Hazard, as last season’s player of the year has looked a shell of himself.

Speaking in an interview, the Belgian has admitted that his form has been poor to the extent that he is no longer guaranteed a starting spot in the Chelsea team.

"It is true that I am no longer untouchable. You can be untouchable when you are playing well, but that has not been the case this season."

Hazard has been unfathomably dismal in this campaign. More concerningly, he has failed to display the hunger or desire that characterised his stellar performances last time out. The winger, whether he likes it or not, has the duty to carry this Blues team creatively and grab games by the scruff of the neck. It has not happened yet.

The good news is that the player is taking the opportunity to reflect on his form. There is no way this Chelsea squad can move forward until they properly self-evaluate.

Hazard also discussed Chelsea’s Champions League clash with Porto, a game for which Mourinho benched him.

"I was even benched against Porto. I think the coach wanted to send out a message by dropping me."

While Mourinho’s decision shocked many people, there were few who vehemently disagreed with it. In fact, Blues fans were hoping that it would spark the Belgian into life. However, Hazard put in another hapless show as the club collapsed in a 3-1 defeat against Southampton.

To be fair to the Belgian, none of the Chelsea players with the possible exceptions of Asmir Begovic, Cesar Azpilicueta and Willian have come close to impressing. With a couple of weeks away from the club, the players will hopefully return to Cobham refreshed and with renewed vigour.

Chelsea welcome Aston Villa when the Premier League resumes next weekend and Jose Mourinho will be looking for a big win to get this next segment of domestic football underway. With Tim Sherwood’s outfit down in 18th position, there are few easier ways to get back into action.

Having said that, Villa will also view the Chelsea game as a chance to take some points off a vulnerable and unstable team.

All I know is that Eden Hazard needs to get back to his best.
