Right Back: Ron Harris

Ronald Edward Harris, also known as ‘Chopper’, is undisputedly one of the greatest players to pull on a Chelsea FC shirt. He played for the Blues for nearly 20 years from 1962 to 1980 and sits atop all of the appearances lists for the club. He made 655 league appearances, 64 in the FA Cup, 48 in the League Cup, and 795 overall.

John Terry is the only active player that comes anywhere close with 672 but it is a record that may never be broken. Youngsters like Thibaut Courtois may one day challenge it but to even be in the conversation would be an incredible achievement.

As far as his play on the pitch goes, Harris was one of the toughest defenders in the history of English football. He was widely feared for his crunching tackles and he gave his teams the sort of toughness needed in that era of the game. Harris was in the squad that won the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1971, giving Chelsea FC its first European trophy.

He never won the league with the Blues, but triumphed in the FA Cup and League Cup during a tumultuous 20 year period in the club’s history. There will never be another defender like Chopper Harris and he is rightfully regarded as one of the best to ever ply his trade at Stamford Bridge.
