Ex-Chelsea FC fan-favourite Joe Cole has claimed that the club still have a chance of winning the Premier League with Jose Mourinho at the helm.

The Blues currently find themselves down in the lowly-depths of 14th position after a defeat at home to Bournemouth scuppered any momentum that was gathered in the weeks previous.

The result leaves Chelsea a mega 17 points off league-leader Leicester City but Joe Cole believes that the unique competitiveness of this year’s edition means that a Blues title defence is still feasible. Speaking to popular Sky Sports programme, Soccer Saturday, the winger stated that with Jose Mourinho in charge, such a feat cannot be ruled out.

"Anything is possible, and that’s why we watch football. You can’t rule them out as champions… that team could beat everyone from now until the end of the season."

I bloody love Joe Cole.

Let’s be realistic here, Chelsea are simply not going to win the Premier League. Having said that, it is worth exploring the Englishman’s comments.

The competition this season is extremely competitive, with any team in the top 15 having a decent chance of defeating anyone else. As a result, the longest winning streak has only been five games (Arsenal, Manchester City). If Mourinho were to string together a few consecutive victories there is a good chance that the club would rocket up the table.

City finished second with 79 points last season. Hence, if Chelsea wanted to win the league, a realistic target tally would be around 80. After earning just 15 points from their first 15 fixtures, the Blues would only be able to drop four points from now through to the end of the season.

While the league is indeed as competitive as it has ever been, even if the title winners were to prevail with only 75 points, the task is still huge.

Special One or not, this is verging on the realms of fantasy.

Nonetheless, it is encouraging to hear optimism emanating from someone who evidently still holds Chelsea is high regard. Cole spent seven seasons at Stamford Bridge and was one of the more talented players to pull on a blue shirt since Roman Abramovich’s takeover.

Unfortunately, injuries hindered what could have been a legendary career and the winger departed in the summer of 2010 to continue his day job elsewhere. Nonetheless, his contributions still saw him win three Premier League titles, four FA Cups and two League Cups and he will forever be cheered on by Blues fans.

Currently, Cole finds himself on loan at Coventry City as the 34-year-old winds down his career. That is not to say that he is taking his foot off the pedal, though. The Sky Blues sit in second place in League One and Cole will be hoping to use his wealth of experience to help the club move up into the second tier of English football.
