Let’s take a moment to round-up and reflect on what was a relatively dire winter transfer window for Chelsea FC.

Paul Pogba? Antoine Griezmann? Alex Teixeira? John Stones (again)? Lol. Nah. Nope. And no (again). Chelsea and their fun-loving board decided that apathy was the approach to the January transfer window. I mean, we did just beat MK Dons 5-1…why unbalance a squad that just did that to a team sitting 20th in the Championship?

In fact, Chelsea’s board thought maybe we’re too good and perhaps should even the playing field. Chinese club Jiangsu Suning FC dropped a reported £25 million on the table so we said goodbye to our beloved Ramires; a midfield wrecking ball who occasionally scored a brilliant goal just to remind us that, beneath the yellow cards, he was indeed Brazilian. Using a slice of that money we decided to buy a reclamation project that no one has been able to reclaim. Welcome back to Europe, Alexandre Pato.

So then it came down to deadline day. An exciting day of last-gasp wheeling and dealing. Cash and players are thrown into a tornado and trying to keep up with where everything/everyone landed is part of the fun! Unless…

  • Loic Remy will remain at Stamford Bridge until the end of the season at least. Leicester City were strongly linked with a move for the Frenchman, but Chelsea were reluctant to let him leave without adequate cover.
  • Chelsea want to cut short Falcao’s ill-fated season-long loan and the Colombian could be heading back to Madrid, possibly via Monaco, where he played between 2011 and 2013.
  • Radamel Falcao has spent the day in Madrid, where agent Jorge Mendes tried to secure a return to Atletico Madrid (via parent club Monaco) but nothing materialised before the deadline.
  • Should Atletico fail to sign Falcao before the transfer window shuts tonight, then he could still move to Jiangsu Suning in the Chinese Super League, where the window remains open until February 26.

Addition by subtraction only works when, ya know, you actually do the subtracting. A deal for Loic Remy was supposedly all but a done deal as Chelsea looked to help Leicester City claim the Premier League title that’d make writing this season off as just plain ol’ wacky a bit easier.

The problem is that the Chelsea-Arsenal match was on during primetime and the folks at Leicester probably got a good long look at him as Guus subbed him on in place of Diego Costa in the 68th minute. Remy used the rare appearance to play like a man battling glaucoma and since then, coincidentally, Leicester have dragged their feet.

Out of nowhere we were nearly relieved of The Great Falcao Experiment as Super Agent Jorge Mendes tried to get his man back to Atletico Madrid. Tried, and so far, that is all. Though, weirdly, China’s transfer window stays open until late February; and if comic books taught me anything it’s to never count out people with the forename ‘Super’…SAVE US JORGE.

It’s been a weird few transfer windows for Chelsea and this was no different. Alex Teixeira is nearly begging for a move to Europe (so much so that Liverpool and Happy Klopp have now joined the chase) yet we ignored him.

Silly season is silly for a reason and typically these rumors are made up to keep the clicks clicking. However Chelsea has, and have had, real needs to tend to and this season has highlighted them all. Yet here we are, trudging along, same as we ever were, with Manchester United, PSG, and Manchester City to play within our next five matches.

Help.
