After a disastrous start to the season, Diego Costa has engineered a miraculous turnaround in his performances, winning over Chelsea FC supporters.

Diego Costa is in a rich vein of form and has scored eight goals since Guus Hiddink took over from the sacked Jose Mourinho. The Brazilian has demonstrated his work ethic, tenaciousness, fight and goal scoring prowess and is turning those fans who booed him in December back on side.

When Chelsea played Sunderland on the 19th December, many fans vented their anger and frustration at the under performing Chelsea FC team. One of the players who bore the brunt of the fan’s displeasure was Diego Costa. When subbed off the striker was subjected to jeers and abuse, prompting him to stare at the crowd as if he wanted to take each one of them outside.

The booing was justified as the Brazilian had performed miserably until that point in the season and had contributed to the champion’s slide towards the relegation zone. However, since that match, Diego Costa has started scoring goals and shown the work ethic that has mostly characterised his time at Stamford Bridge.

Importantly, for any Chelsea FC fan, commitment and working hard is the bare minimum that is required of any player at the club. Diego Costa has exhibited this by making runs down the channels, getting into the box and harassing defenders.

Moreover, he is starting to score vital goals again with his strikes against Watford, Everton and Manchester United symbolising a new sense of determination in the team.

So when the Brazilian was subbed off for the youngster Bertrand Traore, the whole of Stamford Bridge rose to salute him. This was not simply because he had torn Newcastle apart with a goal and an assist in the first half.

It seemed to be that the Chelsea fans were applauding a player that, through hard work and graft, had shown us why we feel in love with him when he initially arrived in 2014.

Now this author has criticized Diego Costa for his lack of goals and petulance in the past. In fact, I have even suggested that the Brazilian along with Cesc Fabregas, Pedro, Eden Hazard and Oscar should be let go in the summer. I stand by that by the way.

However, there is no denying that Diego Costa has always had that determination and fight within his character throughout his life.

His background of street football and unsuccessful trials meant that this relatively late blooming footballer understood that he had to fight for every chance to make it at the top level.

Diego Costa has achieved that and all Chelsea FC fans can appreciate that we have a striker who will not back down as we aim to win the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League.

Diego Costa deserved his standing ovation against Newcastle United. For the first time in many months I also stood up to show my appreciation for him. Chelsea FC fans should now believe that their confrontational striker will be fighting with everything he has for the club until the end of the season.
