England boss Roy Hodgson has revealed that Chelsea FC defender Gary Cahill will lead the Three Lions tomorrow as they take on Germany in a friendly.

England square off with Germany tomorrow afternoon in Berlin as both sides fine tune their preparations ahead of the summer’s EURO 2016. From being potentially left out of the tournament squad, Chelsea FC’s Gary Cahill has been given a vote of confidence by Roy Hodgson as he will captain the side.

The defender found himself struggling for the game time during the first half of the season. Jose Mourinho, and then Guus Hiddink, seemed unwilling to break a Kurt Zouma-John Terry partnership that was brewing. Unfortunately, both suffered injuries, but that left the door open for Cahill.

He has since impressed at the heart of the defence, proving that he still has the quality to be an elite Premier League centre-back. While he may have been fearing his relevance to the England set-up a few months ago, his return to form has been recognised by this announcement.

Of course, this is not the first time that Cahill has captained his country, as he had done so for a few games last year. However, this revelation is a strong vote of confidence as speculation runs wild with regard to the defensive pairing in the summer.

Many feel that Manchester United’s Chris Smalling should partner John Stones in the middle, while others claim that Phil Jones should make it an all-Old Trafford combination.

However, Hodgson’s decision to hand Cahill the captaincy, and thus the start, for tomorrow’s huge game is significant. Of course, pressure will be on the player to perform and show his worth, but he will undoubtedly be relieved that his starting position is somewhat safeguarded.

A couple of decent performances against Germany and the Netherlands should confirm his status as the leading centre-back as England head into EURO 2016.
