As rumours swirl regarding lucrative and outrageous bids for superstars, could Kwadwo Asamoah be the player that Chelsea actually need?

Chelsea have been continuously linked with Ghanaian wing back and current Juventus player Kwadwo Asamoah in the news recently. That said, he’s not exactly a big name to a lot of regular football viewers so perhaps we should take a closer look.

Kwadwo Asamoah is known in Italy as a utility player and for his high work rate. He has won four consecutive titles at Juventus and played under Conte for a lot of that period.

This transfer could be a really strong one for Chelsea as it fixes up that much maligned left-back position that the Blues have been worrying about since Ashley Cole was shipped off to AS Roma.

Furthermore, even though he is most celebrated as a left back and wing back, he has spent a lot of time in the middle of the park as a defensive midfielder. Hence he will provide the incoming manager with emergency options should an injury crisis hit.

The 27-year-old joined Juventus in the summer of 2012 and he has established himself as a key player. After making over 35 competitive appearances during his first two seasons, a serious knee injury ended his 2014/15 campaign prematurely.

Since then, coach Massimiliano Allegri has favoured Patrice Evra over the Ghanaian, meaning that he was restricted to 11 Serie A games this time around.

As a result, he is looking for an exit and could be available for a reasonable price. Cesar Azpilicueta has done an impressive job in filling the left-back spot in recent years, but with Branislav Ivanovic dwindling on the opposite flank, it may be time for him to switch back over.

This leaves Baba Rahman as the only (relatively) experienced left-back in the squad, but he did little to show that he was worth his place over the last 10 months.

In my opinion, this isn’t the most glamorous signing in the world but it seems like the sort of thing Chelsea could use in the upcoming season.

There is too much fervor surrounding some of the signings that Chelsea probably shouldn’t be making. You all know them; the £80 million Gonzalo Higuain bids and similarly outrageous rumours. Though they would be wonderful, they are simply not what Chelsea Football Club needs.

What the Blues need is a strong foot up the backside. Kwadwo Asamoah’s left boot could very well provide that proverbial shake-up.
