Defence

5.5.
Unfortunately, Ola Aina’s full debut didn’t go quite the way he wanted to. He certainly showed flashes of the player he could become, but it was too rough around the edges. Several awful touches and miscontrols (is that a word?) marred a display that should have got Chelsea fans excited about the future.
. RB. England. OLA AINA

6.
Gary Cahill was in the middle of defence. I don’t really remember any of what he did. Is that a good thing? I don’t know. Let’s go with a six.
. CB. England. GARY CAHILL

Branislav Ivanovic proved that he is equally inept in the centre of defence than he is on the right. This is a bit of a shame as he looked somewhat better in the middle at times last season. I’ll give him a six, though, as he gets an extra point to compensate for the amount of abuse he receives on Twitter.
. CB. Serbia. BRANISLAV IVANOVIC. 6

7.5.
Cesar Azpilicueta’s default grade is seven and there was little reason to deviate from it this time. However, a great assist for Victor Moses’ goal bumps him up to heady heights of 7.5. Enjoy it Dave.
. LB. Spain. CESAR AZPILICUETA
