Chelsea have had a disastrous transfer deadline day but all hope is not lost. The Blues are reportedly targeting Southampton’s Cedric Soares.

Chelsea are being slapped in the face on this sunny Thursday in London. Transfer deadline day is rumbling along but the Blues just look further and further away from signing anyone. After being turned down by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Fernando Llorente has been gazumped by Tottenham. The club’s attention is now turning to Southampton’s Cedric Soares.

According to The Guardian, Chelsea may very well make a move for the Southampton man.

"More of a priority could end up being their pursuit of a right wing-back following Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s decision to move to Liverpool instead, and the champions could revisit their interest in Cedric Soares at Southampton"

The Blues are really reaching the peak of desperation. The players got their season back on track with wins over Tottenham and Burnley. Then there were expectations that a few deals would be closed before the deadline.

However, there are under 12 hours left in the window and the Blues look nowhere near signing anyone.

Chelsea are at severe risk of leaving Antonio Conte with a mightily thin squad. With the return of Champions League football, the boss will need a plethora of players to select and rotate. It will be a long and intense season so squad depth is vital to maintaining challenges on all four fronts.

At the moment, the Blues look set to enter the campaign with a depleted box of tools. Conte may have a strong first-team, but injuries and poor form will wreak havoc with the club’s prospects.

Chelsea were also dealt another transfer blow on Thursday as news broke that Tottenham were moving for Fernando Llorente. The Swansea City striker appeared close to a Stamford Bridge switch, but Spurs are now favourites for his signature.

It may not be a position that necessarily needed reinforcement, but it is indicative of the horror show that has been Chelsea’s summer.
