Rating Chelsea’s summer signings after bizarre transfer window
Alvaro Morata – B
Chelsea broke their transfer record to sign Spanish international Alvaro Morata for an initial £56m, with the price potentially rising to £70m. The reason to mark it a B was down to the lackadaisical approach of the board towards the transfer.
The club could have easily saved £10m had a formal approach been made for the player before the Conte-Costa fiasco and before Lukaku was snapped up by Manchester United.
Morata was reportedly unhappy at playing second fiddle to Karim Benzema and was heavily linked to Chelsea, Manchester United and AC Milan before Chelsea blew AC Milan out of the water by flexing its financial muscle.
Morata hasn’t yet had a full-season as the preferred forward yet and had only scored 40 competitive goals before joining Chelsea. Interestingly 20 of them came in last season as a substitute!
Nevertheless, this still could be a fantastic deal for the Blues as even though he’s young; he has ample experience at the top level, having played in the Champions League for both Real Madrid and Juventus.
He is fast, good in the air, good at link-up play, decent at dribbling and is deadly in the 18-yard box. His potential partnership with Eden Hazard is worth looking forward to!
