With the latest transfer rumours suggesting that Barcelona are interested in Andreas Christensen, Chelsea have a tough task keeping him at Stamford Bridge.

If there was ever one constant in football, it is that players don’t turn down Barcelona or Real Madrid. Whenever the two Spanish clubs make an effort to sign someone, they inevitably get their man. Hence, Chelsea fans will be justifiably worried by recent reports that link Andreas Christensen with a Nou Camp switch.

According to the Mirror, Barcelona are targeting Christensen as a long-term defensive investment.

"Andreas Christensen’s Chelsea form is being monitored by Barcelona as the Catalan giants continue their search for a top-class defender…Barcelona are long-term admirers and have been keeping tabs on his progress ever since he stepped in to replace David Luiz."

Christensen has effectively ousted David Luiz from the Chelsea first-team this season. Having returned from an impressive loan spell at Borussia Monchengladbach, the Dane has furthered his development was a string of impressive displays.

While some were fearing his Premier League inexperience, he has leveraged his Bundesliga and Champions League experience to prove he has what it takes. Christensen has shown that he is worthy of a starting role and a long-term career at the highest level.

His performances have been so eye-catching that interest from other big clubs was unavoidable. The calmness he displays on the ball and his assured defensive skill makes him a prime candidate for a team like Barcelona. He fits perfectly with their possession-based style of play.

Chelsea have a lot to do to keep him in West London. Despite their 21st-century success, the Blues can’t compete with the likes of Barcelona. The focus should be on convincing Christensen that he has a key role to play in the club’s future. A lucrative long-term contract is a step in that direction.

Moreover, that will also allow the Blues to get more value out of him. Tieing Christensen down will force Barcelona to pay more for his services. If Chelsea can’t keep him, they can at least get a great price.
