Chelsea has once again been linked to Luis Campos as the sporting/technical director. He would be ideal if Chelsea actually wants to fill the position.

Michael Emenalo left Chelsea a ridiculously long time ago considering he has still not been replaced. In fact, Emenalo has already been sacked at his next job before the Blues even replaced him.

Luis Campos of Lille is back in the rumor mill to come to the Blues. Just like he was over a year ago. And while some may see his buy in bulk, sell high model as similar to Emenalo, it is hard to deny that it has led to success while at Monaco and now Lille. He would be as ideal as Chelsea could do if the Blues decided they actually wanted a technical director.

Marina Granovskaia has been handling many of the duties vacated by Emenalo. And while she is a good negotiator she has yet to provide a vision for the club’s future in the same way a technical director would. And given how long the seat has been empty, there should be doubts that she or the board even wants to fill the spot.

Chelsea has gone three transfer windows without a technical director. In that time, the targets have had little direction. Maurizio Sarri mostly got to pick his wish list but overall there has been no long reaching plan to be seen. In the meantime, Campos has been linked as well as several others. But despite everything, the Blues are still without a technical director. And with a ban incoming and no real strong and consistent rumor, it is hard to say that Chelsea can get a technical director or even wants one.

Simply put, if Chelsea wanted someone to fill the seat they would have got them already. Unless the Blues are waiting for someone very specific to be available, like Campos, there is simply no reason to go this long without a technical director if one was wanted.

In the meantime, Granovskaia has handled the negotiations as before and the role of the manager has increased. Sarri got most of his targets, albeit over two windows. But can a club like Chelsea who goes through managers like candy really give a manager that kind of control? And who handles the loan army and the youth planning?

Without someone to have a long term vision, every decision is done with the short term in mind. And that is exactly where Chelsea is right now. With Campos, the Blues could not only get long term thinking but the type of thinking that would suit the club. Campos loves to scout out the best youth players and asks the manager to trust them. It has paid off for Monaco and now Lille. Chelsea is well poised to do the same.

But that is only if the Blues want the role filled which they have shown virtually no interest in. At some point, Chelsea will need to change that because this short term planning is not sustainable. But until the board shows a desire to change the situation, do not expect Campos to come in any time soon.
