2. Top and bottom of the squad

The man of the hour is undoubtedly Christian Pulisic. Throughout the three matches in June, Pulisic bagged two goals, played a part in earning the penalty against Manchester City and put on a stellar performance at the King Power Stadium. The young American also took home a Man of the Match award in all three matches.

The 21-year-old has had a rollercoaster season. Pulisic became frustrated early with the lack of time he got on the pitch. Once he broke through, however, he missed a significant amount of time with an injury. So, he was licking his chops to get back into the action after the restart. Pulisic came off the bench at Aston Villa, but his opening goal sparked a massive comeback and he’s been in the squad ever since.

Pulisic has been Chelsea’s most important attacking player, even drawing comparisons to club legend Eden Hazard in the process. While it’s a little early for that, there’s no denying Pulisic is one of the first names on Lampard’s team sheet and will be for years to come.

On the flip side, there is Jorginho. It’d be unfair to call the midfielder Chelsea’s worst player of the month—seeing as he hasn’t played—but he’s certainly hit rock bottom. Chelsea’s central defense has been woeful, but even Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen have managed the occasional standout performance. Meanwhile, Jorginho has yet to see the pitch.

Chelsea’s Vice Captain was suspended during the Aston Villa match, but fans certainly expected to see his name called during the Blues’ bout with Man City. Billy Gilmour made a substitute appearance and consequently, a start in the next match at Leicester while Jorginho kept the bench warm.

Nobody truly knows the reason for Jorginho’s extended absence, but it can be inferred that his future is elsewhere. He’s been linked to a move away for months; his falling down the pecking order somewhat confirms that. The 28-year-old and Michy Batshuayi are the only fit regular first team players yet to see action since the restart. However, with Chelsea continuing its winning ways into July, could this be for the best?
