Chelsea is looking to overhaul its roster to fit Frank Lampard’s needs this summer; Jorginho looks to be one of the casualties.

Chelsea is fighting for a top four finish to earn Champions League Football in 2020/21. The finish is going to come down to the wire as the Blues and other competing clubs look to secure the prestigious, lucrative and otherwise important positions in European football. A lot rides on this conclusion, but the club’s focus is also elsewhere.

Chelsea has begun to build a squad that will represent the Blues next season. Two outstanding signings have been made prior to the transfer window opening in Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner.  It’s a terrific start to the new era, but as money comes in, it must go out. Competing at the highest levels of English—and European—football takes money, lots of it. Jorginho looks to be one of the names on the chopping block to create said funds.

For the fifth straight game, he was eligible to play yet started on the sideline. This time, in favor of Billy Gilmour. He did eventually come on in the 80′ to help seal the win. He is clearly out-of-favor in the mind of gaffer Frank Lampard. The key to this is that Jorginho doesn’t fit the style of play that Lampard espouses—fast, attacking football. Jorginho’s skills are much better suited to control the ball between the lines with plenty of short passing and methodical build up play, rather than quickly advancing the ball up the pitch.

That’s not going to fit Lampard’s style for the rest of the season and it certainly won’t mesh with the dynamic squad he’s building for next campaign. Ziyech and Werner fit that attacking, forward-centric approach like gloves. Jorginho doesn’t. With N’Golo Kante and Gilmour poised to hold the central defensive midfielder role going forward, Jorginho will be surplus to requirements for Chelsea. Whether it be a loan or sale outright, expect him to make a move away later in the summer with the most likely destination being Maurizio Sarri’s Juventus. That’s a deal that would benefit all parties involved as Turin is not a bad place to land at all.

Any funds accumulated from a Jorginho loan or sale and other offloaded players will help offset the larger deals hopefully in the works. These may include moves for talents like Kai Havertz, Declan Rice, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and a central defender. Such additions meet more pressing needs for the future revitalized Chelsea side.

Armed with the aforementioned stars, Chelsea would be poised to vie not only for the Premier League title, but the Championship League, as well. Next season will be exciting as the club hopefully avoids nail-biting wins or disappointing losses to lesser sides and slugs it out toe-to-toe with the monsters of Europe. It’s a great time to be a Chelsea fan. Unfortunately for Jorginho, he doesn’t look to be a part of the club’s exciting future.
