4. Chelsea 2-1 Manchester City

Although this outcome was significant for Chelsea, it was nothing in comparison to what it meant for Liverpool, who were easily the biggest Blues fans in the country for one night only. A win for Chelsea and the Reds would be crowned Premier League champions for the first time since its reinvention in 1992, ending a 30 year wait for a league title.

Christian Pulisic got them off to a perfect start, pouncing on a Benjamin Mendy error to sprint half the length of the pitch and finish coolly past Ederson. Captain America was renouncing himself following the return of football after the lengthy break caused by Covid 19 and was certainly looking the superhero part as he constantly troubled the City defenders. He was denied a second by a last ditch Kyle Walker clearance, which would have made it three goals in two games since the restart, but he was involved again in the decisive winner for Chelsea.

Liverpool had to pause their party for a few minutes after Kevin De Bruyne swept a delightful free kick past Arrizabalaga early in the second half but it was not long before they could pop the champagne and start celebrating. After Ederson saved Tammy Abraham’s initial shot, Fernandinho clearly handled Pulisic’s follow up off the line and after confirmation from VAR, Willian slotted from the spot as City’s fellow Brazilian was given his marching orders.

Of course, all attentions instantly turned to Liverpool and their achievement, yet it should not be forgotten the excellent work done by the Blues in defeating one of the best sides in Europe, managed by arguably the finest coach of the last decade. Chelsea managed 11 shots on target to City’s two, with Ederson pulling out a top save to deny Andreas Christensen whilst Mason Mount failed to capitalist on a poor clearance by the keeper.

The race for European football had certainly heated up after both Manchester United and Wolves continued to collect points, although this victory edged Chelsea five points clear with seven matches remaining, a position they would hold onto right until the final day.
