1. Chelsea 4-4 Ajax

The Champions League has churned up instances of unbelievable moments in the past few years, especially when English sides have been involved. Liverpool’s incredible comeback over Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur’s unlikely overhaul of Ajax stand long in the memory, and the Dutch were involved again in an absolutely absurd night at Stamford Bridge.

Words fail to do the meeting justice, the most suitable is probably unexplainable. Chelsea scored twice in the opening five minutes, a Jorginho penalty and own goal from Tammy Abraham typified the craziness that was about to be witnessed.

Ajax, semifinalist from the previous addition of the Champions League, took a two goal cushion into the break thanks to a Quincy Promise header and Hakim Ziyech’s wicked free kick that rebounded off Kepa Arrizabalaga’s face and into the Chelsea net, foreshadowing an everlasting shaky spell for the Spaniard.

They added a fourth shortly after the interval as the visitors seemed home and hosed on their return to Holland. Chelsea had other ideas, Cesar Azpilicueta tapping in from close range to half the deficit that spurred a brilliant revival.

In a stunning turn of events, Ajax had two players sent off in a matter of seconds that eventually led to Jorginho converting his second spot kick of the tie. Now with the Stamford Bridge crowd roaring them on, Chelsea equalized through substitute Reece James, becoming the club’s youngest scorer in this particular competition.

Unbelievably, Azpilicueta thought he’d snatched a winner late on, only for VAR to spoil the party and rule him offside. Breathless and utterly confused what they had just witnessed, the Chelsea fans were treated to a roller coaster of emotions that could not have been healthy for the heart. They also got to see a future signing in the flesh, with Hakim Ziyech signing for the Blues in January.
