3. Abraham has the tools to be a top drawer No. 9

After serving his full debut campaign at Stamford Bridge, it has come to that part of the season where players get judged on an individual basis. This is sometimes determined by the controversial topic of statistics. With Abraham, his goal contribution tally to games played ratio has been finalised for the season.

Chelsea has had many strikers down the years and with that have come the highs of Didier Drogba and the disappointments of Andriy Shevchenko; the good, the bad and everything in between. Comparing Abraham to these two forwards, and Fernando Torres, in their first full season in West London, the numbers are promising.

Shevchenko scored just four goals in first 30 Premier Leagues games at the Bridge. The Ukrainian signed for £30 million in 2006 and was regarded as one of the world’s best finishers at the time. Torres signed from Liverpool in 2011 for £50 million and he was also one of best strikers in world football. However, the ‘No. 9 curse’ proved to come out on top as the Spaniard netted just six goals in 32 matches.

Drogba, a Blues legend, is one of the best forwards to ever play for the club. His arrival in 2004 was a key signing for Jose Mourinho, but he went on to score just 10 goals in his first 26 Premier League games.

Abraham put up better goal statistics than the aforementioned in their first season. The 15 goals in 34 topflight games means there is a ton of potential there. At just 22-years-old, there are many years ahead of Abraham and one poor run of form should not discount that. Experience on the field and improving in the Cobham training centre could be the key to his development, but there’s no doubting his talent. We could be talking about one of the best to represent Chelsea Football Club in a decade’s time.
