Reasons why Chelsea can win the Premier League this season
5. The world class attack
The configuration of the attack can be determined on a match-to-match basis. Hakim Ziyech has had a charmed start to life at Chelsea, with his pitching wedge of a left foot earning him rave reviews from Blues fans. His prowess from dead ball situations has been demonstrated in his two Premier League starts thus far.
One way of looking at the Moroccan is as a left-footed hybrid between Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas. Ziyech combines the dribbling ability of the Belgian with the creativity of the Spaniard. Another way of looking at him is as an underlapping Kevin de Bruyne. In open play, Ziyech operates in the half space where de Bruyne loves to whip in through balls to the box. The difference with Ziyech being the fact that his delivery will be able to target the far post runs of Werner and Chilwell. His understanding with James has evolved in such a way that there is a dual threat in the right, either on the overlap or underlap.
Tammy Abraham has improved upon his debut full campaign at Chelsea this season, as his hold-up play has improved to the point being excellent. He has shown a creative streak to his goalscoring ability, as well. Abraham’s understanding with Werner has also been very good, allowing the German the space to thrive and attack the penalty area.
Speaking of Werner, he can also be used as a lone striker where his pace would be a real asset and he would be able to isolate centrebacks one-on-one. This would allow Jorginho to be put into the starting XI; his passing ability could take advantage of Werner’s pace. This arrangement would allow for a fully fit Christian Pulisic to be slotted into starting line-up, as well.
Pulisic is an x-factor player, as he showed in the post-lockdown period of the Premier League. Pulisic’s ability to find other players—as well as finish chances—gives him that dual threat, unique from anyone else in the team. He could also thrive in isolated situations with his dribbling ability. Callum Hudson-Odoi could be plugged in for this purpose too.
In summation, Chelsea could potentially win the Premier League title this season due to the extremely strong additions and chemistry. The Blues’ bloated squad depth has also proven to be a blessing in disguise with the realities of a COVID-19-impacted football calendar. Chelsea has the advantage of having a relatively soft Champions League group, which would allow Lampard to rest/rotate accordingly. When mixed with the weaknesses of Liverpool and Man City, it’s not too hard to see a trophy being lifted at the Bridge in the near future.
