Mateo Kovacic (Central midfielder): 6.5

Kovacic was decent. He was very tidy on the ball, losing it just seven times while sprinkling in some dribbles and interceptions. He was generally hardworking and applied pressure in midfield when required. He was an essential cog in the machine that was the Chelsea midfield on the day.

Jorginho (Central midfielder): 7

Jorginho played well as he was solid and tidy throughout the entire match. He made five tackles and two interceptions. The Italian was another Blues player that was hardly noticeable throughout the match, and as a defensive player, that’s not always a bad thing. In fact, it’s quite good.

Mason Mount (Attacking midfielder): 8.5

Mount was excellent; the Englishman was everywhere, doing every thing. He put pressure on Rennes players, won the ball back, looked up and picked out Callum Hudson-Odoi beautifully for the match’s opening goal. That perhaps sums up Mount in the match perfectly. He completed all of his crosses and long balls (two each), and contributed to the defense, as well. Mount also made three tackles and ended up being one of the best players on the pitch.

N’Golo Kante (Central midfielder): 7

Kante came on and got busy, per usual. Despite being on the pitch for just a short time, he made two interceptions and did what he could to secure Chelsea’s midfield. Frank Lampard did need to bring on the Frenchman, even though he’d have preferred to give him full 90 minutes of rest today.

Kai Havertz (Attacking midfielder): 5

Havertz was ineffective in his return back to competitive football. He was insignificant in Chelsea’s midfield because Rennes pressed so well that the Blues were on the back foot for most of the second half. Havertz was overwhelmed.
