Callum Hudson-Odoi (Right winger): 8

Hudson-Odoi was not noticeable in the first half up until his goal, largely due to the fact Timo Werner skied his excellent cross into the box. The Englishman’s control of the ball and superb finish highlight his technical quality. Hudson-Odoi played well overall, stretching play and linking up with Azpilicueta on the right.

Tammy Abraham (Striker): 6

Abraham played OK in this game, nothing spectacular like recent matches. He was decent in leading the line as he applied pressure on the Rennes centerbacks when he was supposed to. He was fantastic in doing so. He also didn’t have any howlers, unlike Werner.

Timo Werner (Left winger): 3

Werner was poor; so much so, many were making Alvaro Morata comparisons. Morata was always good at getting into goal scoring positions, Werner seems to be excellent at that too, but he missed two big chances in the match. This is very poor for someone touted as one of Europe’s best strikers. Werner also missed two big chances in the Newcastle game and all seemed to be forgotten when he assisted Abraham. The German international will need to improve his finishing in the near future with some big fixtures on the horizon.

Olivier Giroud (Striker): 9

Giroud was superb against Rennes. He came on in the 67′ for Abraham and instantly impacted the game. He started winning headers for Chelsea in the midfield and linking up play up top. Giroud’s goal was just a result of his determination, per usual. He gets a nine because he scored a winning goal that Chelsea did not deserve—made even more impressive by the fact the chance wasn’t even created for him.

Hakim Ziyech (Right winger): 8.5

Ziyech came on with fifteen minutes remaining on the clock and created two big chances, one missed by Chilwell and the other by Werner. It is evident that the game would’ve been different had the Moroccan started. His decision making once again reflected his intelligence. Ziyech completed just 13/17 passes, but two of those 13 were big chances. It was ultimately from the chance he created for Werner that Giroud scored the go-ahead goal.
