Chelsea team news

A potential season-defying moment overshadowed the midweek Champions League win against Juventus with the injury to defender Ben Chilwell. The England international went off in the second half after a collision in the center circle with Adrien Rabiot. Post-match, Tuchel said that the fullback had a sharp pain in his knee. In recent days, reports suggest that the Chelsea defender will be out for the rest of the calendar year with anterior cruciate ligament damage. Further tests will be taken in the new year to find out if Chilwell can feature again this season for the Blues.

In the very same match against Juventus, midfielder N’Golo Kante went off injured in the first half due to a knee problem. The Frenchman is a doubt for Sunday’s clash against Man United. Mateo Kovacic remains out with a hamstring injury for this weekend, as well. German sensation Kai Havertz is a doubt also with a hamstring injury.

Returning strike force Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner were both on the bench in the Champions League midweek. The German came on in the second half and scored the fourth goal well in stoppage time. It remains to be seen whether or not Lukaku will start this weekend against his former club, Manchester United.

Man United team news

The northwest side could be without Mason Greenwood, who tested positive for COVID-19 prior to facing Watford, but could very well return to the squad depending on his isolation period. French duo Raphael Varane and Paul Pogba will be out for this clash. Varane has a hamstring injury and could be back to face Crystal Palace while Pogba sustained a thigh injury while on international break. England fullback Luke Shaw is a major doubt with a concussion he sustained at the loss against Watford. Man United captain Harry Maguire will serve his one-match suspension for the clash with Chelsea after his two second half yellow cards against the Hornets.

Midfielder Donny van de Beek is well in line to make his second consecutive start for the Red Devils after his start in midweek against Villarreal. Left back Alex Telles could start at the position once again in Shaw’s absence.
