Chelsea at Aston Villa player ratings: Victory at Villa Park
By Tan Yi Hao
Mason Mount (Right winger): 6/10
While the Englishman’s work rate was once again unquestionable, Mount did in fact struggle to impose himself upon the game offensively. Needless to say, his glaring second half miss served as the “highlight” of his performance on the night and it could well have cost Chelsea the game. An uninspiring day at the office indeed for the 22-year-old.
Christian Pulisic (Centre forward): 6/10
A passenger for large parts of the first half, Christian Pulisic recorded only 15 touches and one touch in the final third during his first 45 minutes on the pitch. While the American did perform better in the second half when shifted to the right wingback position, neither position in which he was deployed came naturally to him. As a result, fans are still not seeing the maverick that they know Pulisic can be; with his performance on Boxing Day only good enough for a rating of six.
Callum Hudson-Odoi (Left winger): 8.5/10
The outstanding forward of the three that started the match, Hudson-Odoi played a pivotal role in ensuring that Chelsea brought home all three points against Villa. Aside from winning a penalty for Chelsea to equalise and putting in a brilliant cross which Lukaku duly converted from, the Englishman was also involved in Chelsea’s third goal, putting Lukaku through on goal only for the Belgian to be brought down for another penalty. With a performance like this, surely the 21-year-old has done all he can to maintain his spot in the starting XI.
Romelu Lukaku (Striker): 8.5/10
The man who quite literally powered Chelsea through to all three points, Lukaku was everything that the Blues were solely missing throughout the past three weeks or so. Clinical in front of goal, Lukaku also possesses the ability to dominate and occupy opposing centrehalves, creating much needed space in which the likes of Mount and Hudson-Odoi were able to operate. The Belgian was instrumental in Chelsea’s win on Sunday and on the back of this performance, surely has to start as long as he is fit to play moving forward.
