Goalkeeper: Thibaut Courtois, Real Madrid

The goalkeeper position was a really tough pick due to Edouard Mendy’s prowess with both the the Senegal team and his impressive performance with Chelsea. However, the recent 4-1 loss puts a stain on his CV. Thibaut Courtois, on the other hand, has been Real Madrid’s best player this season, alongside Benzema. The former Chelsea goalkeeper has been performing at top level consistently since making the switch to the Spanish capital. He is constantly making saves to ensure that Real Madrid stays in every game.

Right back: Reece James, Chelsea

The Chelsea academy graduate—who is just recently returning from injury—is one of the best in the world at his positions. The Blues’ starlet is surely the most favoured in the right back position due to his excellence at both ends. His goal contributions (six goals and seven assists in 27 matches) unsurprisingly beats the tally of Real Madrid’s fullbacks this season. Balanced in both attack and defence, the England international has an impressive combination of power and skill, amongst other traits. James comfortably gets in over Dani Carvajal in this role.

Centerback: Thiago Silva, Chelsea

Age is just a number with Thiago Silva. The 37-year old keeps pulling the strings for both Chelsea and the Brazilian National Team, and he does this on a consistent level, as well. Far ahead of any defender in the Real Madrid side—no disrespect to Eder Militao—Silva can currently start in defence for any team in the world. His partnership in a back three with Cesar Azpilicueta and Antonio Rudiger has made sure that Chelsea is one of the best defensive sides in all of Europe.

Centerback: Antonio Rudiger, Chelsea

Rudiger started the match against Brentford and he was guilty of giving up two quick goals. Despite that, the German is still one of the best in the world at his position. He is being courted by a host of teams around Europe for the aforementioned skillset. Rudiger is definitely a hot shot, in addition to his defensive abilities. He scored a screamer against the Bees on Saturday, which proved to be Chelsea’s only goal. Rudiger’s ruthlessness and strength in defense is unarguably one of his greatest strengths. He is a crucial part of the partnership that has made the Blues one of the hardest sides to break through in Europe; an in-form Rudiger is every forwards nightmare.

Left back: David Alaba, Real Madrid

David Alaba has been phenomenal for Ancelotti’s side in his debut campaign for Real Madrid. His performances have put him miles ahead of his counterpart, Ferland Mendy, as well. This is no offense to the latter either, who is impressive at defending, but leaves a lot to be desired going forward. Balanced in both attack and defence, the Austrian is versatile and he can play on any side of the defense. This makes him not only a great utility player, but also a great asset to his team. Ben Chilwell is out for the remainder of the year and Marcos Alonso is slacking, so the former Bayern Munich defender is the most preferred individual for this position in the combined XI.
