Wednesday will see Stamford Bridge play host to what many consider to be the best UEFA Champions League contest of the current campaign. The highly anticipated clash pins the reigning tournament champion, Chelsea, against its semifinal foe from last year, Real Madrid. While the previous five meetings between the two stories clubs tips the scales in the home side’s favor, football fans can count on one hand how many times Los Blancos have been knocked out in consecutive seasons by the same club. It’s sure to be a historical tug-of-war on display.

The Blues ended their campaign prior to the international break on a high note, riding a lengthy unbeaten run. Meanwhile, Real Madrid had just been battered by Barcelona, 4-0, and it was low in spirits. They came back from the brief stoppage with two totally different results, making this game even juicier. Carlo Ancelotti is sadly expected to miss a return to his old stomping grounds as he recovers from COVID-19. Nevertheless, this provides Thomas Tuchel and Co. an opportunity to jump out in front ahead of the tactical mastermind’s anticipated return to the touchline next week. Perhaps the two most evenly-matched sides in Europe—aside from Chelsea and Liverpool—will duke it out for a chance to book a place in the UCL semifinal.

Here is how The Pride of London team sees the contest playing out:

Anthony Gatt: 1-0 Chelsea

After the abysmal performance at the weekend, this team needs to bounce back to avoid further humiliation against Real Madrid. I do back the Blues to do this, so therefore, I believe they will grind out a 1-0 result at home

Caden Charpentier: 2-1 Chelsea

Following an embarrassment that was the Brentford match, Tuchel’s side finds a way to get a result. The defense will step up and put on a world class performance against Karim Benzema and Co. Kai Havertz finds the back of the net, along with Mason Mount. This has to be a statement game for the Blues, and I do believe this will give this side loads of confidence.

Gabe Henderson: 2-1 Chelsea

I truly believe the Blues’ back line will put in a fantastic shift on the biggest stage. The veteran presence at the back with Cesar Azpilicueta, Antonio Rudiger and Thiago Silva is a huge positive for Tuchel as he can focus on improving other areas of the pitch and let the experience do its thing. Meanwhile, the return of Reece James will work wonders as he improves the side in both phases of the game. I think Benzema and Vinicius Jr. are in great form, too great to be denied for an entire 90 minutes it seems. I see one of them finding the back of the net at the Bridge, but the Blues will wear their heart on their sleeves and put in a winning performance for the SW6 faithful.

Olaoluwa Nwobodo: 2-1 Chelsea

The bright side about the Brentford thrashing is that Chelsea can’t do any worse than that, right?? Tuchel will make sure to get that horrendous result against the Bees out of the players’ minds if it’s going to have any effect on their confidence. Real Madrid has its own problems, mainly in defense, so the Blues should keep this in mind.

Kevin Peacock: 2-1 Chelsea

There’s not much more that screams Chelsea than losing 4-1 at home to Brentford followed by a Champions League win over Real Madrid. Maybe off-field issues have started to affect the Blues or maybe this weekend’s loss was a mere blip. A magical night under the lights at the Bridge—or, as the media luvvies like to keep telling us, does that only happen at Anfield?—will see Chelsea take a lead back to the Bernabeu.

Joseph Joe: 1-1 Draw

After an impressive comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, Real Madrid will be looking to go forward in the competition, with talisman Benzema available for selection. Chelsea, on the other hand, will be looking to overturn a recent home defeat to get its momentum going. The Blues have not lost against the Spanish side in the five meetings between the two in history. It’ll be a tough match but the scores will be leveled heading back to Spain.
