4. Contract extensions, players leaving on loan

In the past couple of weeks, there have been multiple business deals already conducted and confirmed by the club. In all fairness, it was something that the Chelsea fans were least bothered about heading into the summer. Nevertheless, here I am bringing to you news about even the smallest deals that are happening at Chelsea Football Club right now.

The first deal to go through was that of Sam McClelland to League Two side Barrow AFC. This will be McClelland’s first loan spell and it comes soon after the Blues activated a one-year contract extension clause. The 20-year-old centerback spent much of last season dealing with a long-term injury. Having barely survived the drop last season, Barrow will be hoping the signing of McClelland will help improve the side defensively. The second deal was that of Ethan Wady, who joined non-league side Woking FC on a season-long loan. Wady signed a one-year contract extension before heading out to Woking, where he will be expected to compete for a starting spot.

The next couple of deals came as a shock as both Nathan Baxter and Jamie Cumming were sent out on loan to Hull City and MK Dons respectively. The loan deal for Baxter has an option to buy included and according to local media, Baxter has been told that he can leave the Blues if he wishes. It remains to be seen whether this is the end of the highly-rated goalkeeper’s young career at Chelsea or just a bump in the road. On the other hand, Cumming has rejoined MK Dons after playing a key role for the Dons in the second half of last season.

Another young goalkeeper who leaves the club on a season-long loan is the 18-year-old Prince Adegoke, who joins Welling United. Apart from this, one of the other Chelsea youngsters to attract interest from Southampton and Derby County is George Nunn. Nunn has been allowed to train with Southampton ahead of a move. With only a year left on his contract, let’s hope the Blues can recoup some of the fees they paid Crew Alexandra to buy Nunn in the mid-2010s.
