Inter Milan slap an asking price of £53 million for Chelsea target
Chelsea have been in search of a right back to provide immediate cover as Reece James continues to remain on the sidelines. Inter Milan right back Denzel Dumfries is a target for the Blues in this winter transfer window.
Ahead of the January transfer window, Chelsea were handed a major blow when James, arguably the best full back in the league, suffered a recurrence of his knee injury and was ruled out for another month.
Cesar Azpilicueta remains Chelsea’s only available right back but the Spaniard is on the wrong side of the thirty and age is taking a toll on him. He is slow and doesn’t join the attack as often as James would. Even the most loyal supporters would argue that Azpilicueta shouldn’t have been offered an extension last summer and despite his presence, Chelsea are now looking for a new right back.
The name of Josip Juranovic floated some time back. The Celtic defender has had a rewarding FIFA World Cup and his exploits in Qatar didn’t go unnoticed as his name was internally discussed in the Chelsea offices.
Chelsea learn the price of Inter Milan right back Denzel Dumfries
Another name that remains on Chelsea’s shortlist is Dumfries. Inter Milan right back is in demand and is attracting interest from the Premier League, with Chelsea being one of the most interested parties.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sempre Inter), the Nerazzurri are aware of Dumfries’ demand and have slapped a €60 million (£53 million) price tag on the Netherlands international. Inter directors Beppe Marotta and Piero Ausilio are ready to cash in on the 26 year old. Inter Milan view Dumfries as the option who can be replaced and sold for a huge price as they aim to balance the books before 30th June.
Dumfries was one of the best players for Netherlands at the world cup and Inter want to take advantage of his impressive world cup campaign. However, the £53 million price tag could deter Chelsea from signing Dumfries.
Dumfries is more comfortable playing as a wing back, his natural position at Inter Milan. Simeone Inzaghi has used him as a right wing back in the 3-5-2 system, allowing him to raid forward and join the attack and use his strengths.
Dumfries was signed as a replacement for Achraf Hakimi and while he has not replicated Hakimi’s numbers, he has provided a similar attacking presence on the right flank. Chelsea does need a right back but paying £53 million for Dumfries isn’t a wise move.
