Chelsea Women: Zecira Musovic earns herself an extension till 2025 with CFCW
The Blues have locked up their goalkeeper for the future. Swedish international Zecira Musovic completely turned the tide on her Chelsea future with a run of games in December and January that gave the Blues no choice but to extend her. Six saves. That is how many the Swede managed against Arsenal at the Emirates this season, allowing only a penalty by Kim Little to find the back of the net. Nobody knew her future a few months ago, but now it is clear.
Magdalena Eriksson and Pernille Harder’s contract discussions have taken up a lot of the Blues’ news off the pitch, but Musovic putting pen to paper on a contract until 2025 is a massive win for this club. It is not just the quality she has shown on the pitch. Musovic is arguably one of the biggest personalities off of it.
Not once did she put her head down when she was not getting playing time. The Swede just kept smiling. She knew her time would come, and when she received consistent starts for the first time this season, Emma Hayes has had trouble leaving her out of the team.
Musovic made just three starts in the first four months of the campaign in all competitions, but after Hayes gave her the opportunity against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League to close out 2022, she has yet to give up her spot. Rumors toward the transfer window’s conclusion had Belgian Nicky Evrard linked with the Chelsea Women for a summer move.
Chelsea Women’s keeper Zecira Musovic extends till 2025
Throughout her career, Musovic has invited challenges. From losing her place to Erin McLeod at Rosengard in 2016 to continuing to push each day in training as the second choice for the Blues, the 26 year old goalkeeper is the exact kind of competitive personality this Chelsea Women needs to keep around.
Despite how Musovic is performing at the moment, it could be shaping up to be a three-way competition for next season’s No. 1 spot. Ann-Katrin Berger’s mistakes between the sticks at the beginning of December opened up the door for Musovic to prove herself to the football club. After winning three Swedish league titles with FC Rosengard, Musovic made her move to west London in 2021 and has not looked back since.
The joy was clearly there when CFC and Musovic made it official.
"“I feel like this is just the start and the best is yet to come. I’m really excited to see how far we can go as a team, but also me individually,” Musovic stated after signing the new deal."
Those words have to give Blues fans goosebumps. Many just wanted Musovic to get a chance for a run of games. Hayes’ trust in her against Arsenal paid off, propelling the contract talks that may have been in question during the first half of the campaign. At the age of 32, Berger is not going to be able to perform at a world-class level for much longer. There were questions if Musovic could take the reins from the German veteran, or if the club even believed in her, but the answer is evident now.
Musovic’s reaction at the Bridge on Tuesday:
The Erikkson and Harder question still remains, but Paul Green and Hayes can feel content that they now have part of the goalkeeper situation solved. The trust is there from the coaching staff to the ownership in Musovic. At some point, Berger is going to find her way back into the starting lineup, but it does not appear to be anytime soon. Just a little over a month since Sophie Ingle confirmed her place in west London for two more years, Chelsea Women continues to figure out the logistics off the pitch.
Hayes and the Blues have the ambition to compete at the highest level of Europe for years to come. Musovic’s potential growth is going to be a massive part of that. The Swedish international is truly a special player that has the ability to take her game to new heights with the work ethic she has embodied from the beginning of her professional career.
