Saturday’s matchup against Southampton will be a true measuring stick moment for this squad. The Saints have been one of the worst teams in the English top flight, ranking 19th in goals conceded (1.8 per match), 17th in goals scored (0.8 per match), and 18th in xG (21.8 on the season). They’re all but guaranteed to get relegated from the Premier League, so serious questions will need to be asked about the players and manager if Chelsea can’t come away from the clash with all three points.

For my own sanity and yours, dear reader, I’ll focus on gambling for the remainder of this guide. However, the Blues’ maddening inconsistency has even made betting more difficult over the past few months. We are truly in the trenches right now.

Unless both sides miraculously found their shooting boots during this week’s training sessions, I have a feeling this contest will be a ‘snoozefest’. I already outlined Southampton’s abysmal scoring record in the EPL, and somehow Chelsea’s isn’t much better. Potter and his boys are averaging only 0.2 more goals per match than the Saints, despite having a better xG by 4.8. These numbers point to the continued trend of poor finishing that has plagued Stamford Bridge for nearly two full seasons now.
