Time for Jose Mourinho to return to Chelsea for the third time

Luis Enrique and Julian Nagelsmann were the front runners for the Chelsea job. However the very reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported a complete change of plans,

"Chelsea want to be 100% sure of their next coach & not having any question marks — the process takes time.Julian Nagelsmann has been in regular contact with Chelsea — but crucial points were never fully agreed.Luis Enrique, out of the race.Pochettino, in the race."

Luis Enrique was supposedly taken off the shortlist days ago, and the Chels’ faithful expected the former FC Bayern and RB Leipzig Head Coach Julian Nagelsmann to take the hot seat with minimal competition for his spot. But when asked by Sky Sport DE about the collapse in talks for the Head Coach job at Chelsea, Julian Nagelsmann replied saying,

"“To cancel something, you have to commit to something”"

This has created widespread confusion and panic amongst the Chelsea fanbase with the majority of the supporters opposing the idea of hiring the former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino who is now the new favorite.

The fans are unconvinced by his tactical ability failing to succeed and win trophies at the North London club even after staying at the club for more than half a decade. He was then appointed by the French Giants Paris Saint-Germain who had an elite squad and were already pretty successful domestically, where he struggled to deal with the egos at the club.

All of this has led to the Chelsea supporters calling out to the ‘Special one’ for help.

Jose Mourinho and Chelsea – Third time’s a charm

The rotating door system in Abramovich’s 19 years at the club saw Chelsea appoint 14 different managers. But no manager comes close to the young Mourinho who was the first manager appointed by the Russian owner after parting ways with Claudio Ranieri who was already at the club.

Jose Mourinho landed in London after a crazy Champions League campaign with the underdogs – Porto. Expectations were high and Mourinho obviously didn’t disappoint. He won consecutive league titles and set multiple records, some of which stand to this day.

In his first season in-charge, Mourinho’s Blues created a record that they still hold for the best defence in top flight history. Another massive record was for the most points which lasted until the 2017/18 Premier League season. His second season saw him defending the league title and the league cup too. He also went on to win the FA Cup later and eventually left by mutual consent having cemented his names in the history books.

‘The Special one’ returned to the Bridge in 2013 for his second spell labelling himself as ‘the Happy one’ where he helped the side regain their lost status under Andre Villas-Boas. And obviously, the Portuguese tactician didn’t take long, winning the league title and the league cup in the second season itself. But with issues on and off the field in the third season, Mourinho was sacked.

Since then, Mourinho has worked with top English sides like Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. Even though he couldn’t win much at Spurs maintaining their tradition, he did win three trophies at the Old Trafford with a squad that looked mediocre at best. And after moving to Rome, he won the UEFA Conference League in the first season itself.

Mourinho’s legacy speaks for himself and his history with the club proves that he should be one of the leading candidates for the job. The fans trust the Portuguese blindly and know that there are a very few options out there that could out compete him.

When it comes to ownership, he has had a fair amount of experience with individualistic ownerships and Corporate ownerships too something that Boehly and co. should find appealing.

Above all, Jose Mourinho is a serial winner. He continues to win trophies to this day and that is something that Chelsea should be looking for in a manager now. After not having much luck with the likes of Frank Lampard and Graham Potter, appointing someone like Vincent Kompany or even Mauricio Pochettino would be a huge risk and could go horribly wrong.

Would you not want to have Jose Mourinho back at the Bridge?
