Chelsea and Mason Mount are at a standstill when it comes to the latter’s contract negotiations. Mount is set to enter the final 12 months of his deal at Stamford Bridge in the summer and if a new deal isn’t signed by then, the Englishman will be sold.

Mount has been an integral part of the Chelsea setup over the last three seasons. Although his impact and level of performance have diminished this season, belief is high in him being one of club’s top players for years to come.

Mount’s contract expires in 2024 which means he is set to enter the final 12 months of his deal this summer. Mount currently earns £80,000 per week and is one of the lowest paid earners at the club. Chelsea have been in talks to extend the contract but have not reached an agreement.

Chelsea would like Mason Mount to sign a one year extension

Chelsea are offering a seven year deal which Mount is reluctant to agree to. He wants a wage bump that will see him earn £250,000 per week, which is in similar bracket to his national team mates. The talks had stalled and it looked like Mount is inclined to leave this summer.

Liverpool are attentive to Mount’s situation and have in fact made him the top transfer target in the summer transfer window. Apart from Liverpool, even Arsenal are keeping tabs on the 24 year old. Chelsea’s stance is clear on Mount, if he doesn’t sign a new deal, he will be available for £70 million in the summer.

With contract talks not progressing, Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has suggested a plan that could help the Blues buy more time and keep Mount at the club. According to Evening Standard, Boehly has asked the 24 year old to sign a short term one year or two year deal instead of the initial seven year contract. A one year contract extension will give Chelsea more time to work out the details of the longer contract and help them stave off pressure from Liverpool.

Having Mount’s contract extended till 2025 will put Chelsea in a stronger position to negotiate and reject advances from Liverpool or any other interested club. Manchester United and Newcastle United are also keen on the Englishman. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich would also be interested in Mount but they will be willing to wait until next season, when he becomes available on a free transfer.

The talks have started again between two parties over an extension, which is a positive sign but it remains to be seen if an agreement is reached and the idea suggested by Boehly comes into action.
