Significant triple Chelsea injury setback contributes to passive run-in
Chelsea’s latest triple injury setback, which was revealed by Frank Lampard at his pre-match press conference ahead of Brentford, shall contribute to a particularly passive run-in for the Blues. The season is over, in spite of what CFC caretaker manager Frank Lampard dutifully says.
Lampard gave a seemingly jovial but truthfully frosty response to a journalist’s question on Tuesday as he conducted the most recent redundant presser. The gaffer was frankly asked – pun absolutely intended – if the campaign is ultimately over for the west London side. The head coach chuckled as he stated that the tone of the inquiry certainly gave the impression that 2022/23 had nothing to give at this stage. Yet the Blues icon then became prickly when continuing his reply, suggesting that the status of being at CFC should inspire enough pride at any point. Admirable as that statement was, and while the 44-year-old must retain public buoyancy, the term is finished with nothing to gain in actuality.
By the way, this assessment of the contemporary indifferent Blues situation is no criticism of Lampard. He cannot solve the puzzle that is Chelsea Football Club alone at present. Maybe given resources and much time, the former England international midfielder would be able to enforce true momentum by 2024 or something. But the outfit realistically need a galactico-style manager, which ‘Super Frank’ is sadly not. All that remains is the possibility for the squad to hold their heads slightly higher through wins and decent displays. Although that mere feat will now also be harder without three stars.

Lampard confirmed that Reece James and Mason Mount will be unavailable for the remainder of the season. Mount might perhaps return for the Premier League finale versus Newcastle United, but even that is doubtful. Kai Havertz will miss the Bees clash, at least.
