Chelsea are preparing for a fresh project under new manager Mauricio Pochettino. The Argentine manager has evaluated the squad and is hopeful of having Mason Mount at the club when he joins the Blues in July. However, Mount’s situation is far more complicated now as top clubs continue to queue up for his services.
Mount will enter the final 12 months of his deal at Chelsea this summer and so far no breakthrough has been achieved in negotiations. The Englishman currently earns around £80,000 per week, which puts him out of the top 20 earners at the club.
Mount surely deserves a wage bump for his stupendous performances and wants a salary similar to what his England teammates earn at their clubs. The Blues offered him a £250,000 per week but wanted him to sign a seven year contract. The Englishman wasn’t willing to commit to a long term deal and hence both the contract talks have stalled.
Chelsea to make one last push to extend the contract of Mason Mount
Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly opened the talks again with CFC offering him a one year deal. With the increasing interest from clubs like Liverpool and Arsenal, this was seen as an attempt to buy Chelsea more time and come up with a viable offer, however, Mount has not signed an extension yet.
CFC have been very clear about their policy. If a player enters the last 12 months and hasn’t signed an extension, he will be sold in the transfer window. The Blues will ask for £70 million for Mount in the summer but before entering the summer transfer window, Chelsea will make one final push to extend Mount’s contract.
According to The Athletic, Arsenal want to sign Mount to strengthen their attacking midfield but will face competition from Manchester United and Liverpool. However, the Blues will make a final push to extend his deal. The incoming manager, Pochettino, is a huge admirer of Mount and wants to keep him at the club. In fact, Mount could be one of the four key players of Pochettino’s project alongside Conor Gallagher, Reece James and Levi Colwill.
Retaining Mount’s services won’t be an easy as Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United all are interested in signing the Englishman. Former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is also keen to sign the 24 year old at Bayern Munich.
Perhaps, the final push is being made on Pochettino’s request but there’s no guarantee that he will stay at the club beyond this summer.
