There is nothing that gets a fanbase quite as excited as a new signing. However, throughout Chelsea's history, perhaps more than most clubs, they have a tendency to re-sign players, bringing back to Stamford Bridge for a second spell.

So, we have picked out eight of the most noteworthy players to have enjoyed multiple stints in blue.

Peter Osgood

One of Chelsea's greatest-ever players will forever be Peter Osgood. In 380 appearances for the club, he scored 150 goals, meaning only four men have netted more times for the Blues. During this period, he won the club's first-ever FA Cup, beating Leeds in a replay in 1970, scoring during the victory at Old Trafford.

A year later, Osgood was instrumental as Dave Sexton's team won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. That final also went to a replay, both matches played in Piraeus, netting during both the draw and subsequent victory over Real Madrid. The striker left for Southampton, followed by stints at Norwich and Philadelphia Fury, before returning to Chelsea four years later, fitting finishing his career back at Stamford Bridge.

Graeme Le Saux

Another bona fide Chelsea legend is Graeme Le Saux. He made over 300 appearances for the Blues, debuting when they were still a Second Division club in 1988/89. He departed soon after to sign for Blackburn Rovers, with whom he won the Premier League, but returned to Chelsea following four years away.

During his second spell. Le Saux won five major honours, starting the final victories in the Coca-Cola Cup and UEFA Super Cup, the latter a 1-0 win over Real Madrid at Stade Louis II. The full-back is a rare example of a player who enjoyed more success during their second stint in West London.

David Luiz

David Luiz was not your typical centre-back, in every sense of the word. He was sold to Paris Saint-Germain for £50 million in 2014, only to return to the Blues just two years later for £34 million, not typical fees for defenders at the time. Overall, the Brazilian made 248 appearances for Chelsea, winning the Premier League, the Champions League and two Europa Leagues.

He scored 18 times, each seemingly more spectacular than the last, and we may never see a centre-back quite like him ever again. Even a season at Arsenal did not tarnish David Luiz's legacy, as he found out when he returned to Stamford Bridge with Pafos for a Champions League tie in 2026.

Didier Drogba

Of all the players on this list, the returning Chelsea player supporters have been delighted to welcome back more than any other has to be Didier Drogba. During his first nine-year spell in West London, the Ivorian icon was the best striker in the division, winning three Premier League titles and the Champions League. He also had a knack for scoring in every final in which he featured, which is not a bad habit to have.

Drogba departed for Shànghǎi Shēnhuā following the Champions League triumph in Munich, also spending a season at Galatasaray, before returning to Chelsea as a 36 year old. He scored just seven goals upon his return, but helped José Mourinho's team reclaim the Premier League title. Thus, with 164, only Frank Lampard, Bobby Tambling and Kerry Dixon have scored more goals for the club.

Romelu Lukaku

Looking at some players who were not so successful upon their return to Chelsea, Romelu Lukaku has had a strange career hasn't he? He first joined Chelsea from Anderlecht as a teenager for £17 million. During this stint, he appeared just 15 times for the Blues, scoring no goals, loaned out to West Bromwich Albion and Everton, before the Toffees paid £28 million to make this move permanent.

The Belgian joined Manchester United for £75 million and fired Inter Milan to the Serie A title, which convinced Chelsea to buy him back for an enormous £97.5 million. However, this would prove to be one of the worst value for money transfers in history. Upon his return, he scored just 15 goals in 2021/22, and the Blues could not offload him. Loans back to Inter and then to Roma followed, eventually sold to Napoli for €30 million, representing an enormous loss, now at Fenerbahçe.

In total, spread across 11 years, Lukaku scored only 15 times in 59 appearances for Chelsea, never showing his best during any of his spells at the club.

João Félix

A player Chelsea seemingly just could not quit on was João Félix. His €126 million move to Atlético Madrid was a disaster, thereby loaned to Chelsea in January 2022. The Blues paid a loan fee of €11 million just to have the Portuguese international for half a season.

Well, this fee looked even more ridiculous when, less than an hour into his debut, he was sent of during a defeat at Craven Cottage. He scored only four goals in 20 appearances, which seemingly signalled the end of Félix in West London. That though would be a wrong assumption.

Having burnt all of his bridges at Atleti, he spent the next season at Barcelona, who decided not to keep him in Catalonia. Instead, Chelsea splurged €52 million to bring him back to Stamford Bridge, sacrificing Conor Gallagher in the process. Again, Félix did not live up to the hype. Of his seven goals, four came in the Conference League, shipped out to A.C. Milan on loan just six months later, before being sold to Al-Nassr for £26.2 million, a huge loss, making both spells border line catastrophic.

Nemanja Matić

We bet you didn't know that Nemanja Matić had two seperate spells at Chelsea, but that is in fact true. He first joined from Košice as a 21 year old, loaned out to Vitesse Arnhem before being sold to Benfica as part of the deal to bring David Luiz to Stamford Bridge. At this point, he appeared to have no future in West London.

However, Matić's impressive performances in Lisbon convinced the Blues to bring him back for around £21 million, which would prove to be a bargain. The midfielder made over 150 appearances for the club, a key figure in two Premier League title triumphs. Past his prime, Matić was sold to Manchester United for £40 million, subsequently playing for Roma, Stade Rennais and Olympique Lyonnais, still going at the age of 38 at Sassuolo. Unquestionably, he gave his best years to Chelsea.

Victor Moses

Amazingly, Victor Moses was on Chelsea's books for nine years, but had two very distinct careers at the club. After arriving from Wigan Athletic in 2012, he made 43 appearances across six competitions during that first season, without ever truly becoming a regular. The Nigerian international was then loaned out to Liverpool, Stoke City and West Ham, seemingly with no future at Stamford Bridge.

However, the arrival of Antonio Conte transformed Moses' career. He is most fondly remembered as a flying right-wing-back, starting 29 times during the club's most-recent Premier League winning campaign in 2016/17. Moses was a key figure the following campaign too but, after Conte departed, disappeared into obscurity again. Moses was loaned out to Fenerbahçe, Inter Milan and Spartak Moskva, before moving to Russia permanently.

He briefly returned to England with Luton Town in 2024/25, now playing for Kaysar Kyzylorda in the Kazakh Premier League. Moses was essentially a journeyman who played for 11 different clubs, apart from during two years under Conte, when he was briefly one of the best in the world in a specific role.
