More than half of the January transfer window is gone and Chelsea have made no additions to their squad. It is pretty clear that the sporting directors are convinced with the squad that they have put together, although results on the pitch tell a different story. Fortunately, it looks like the Blues' hierarchy is willing to accept one mistake they made in the summer and rectify it this month.
Enzo Maresca had openly called for a centre-back in the summer after Levi Colwill's ACL injury. Those requests were ignored though, and Chelsea have paid the price for it since then.
Their defence has been their weakest point throughout the campaign. In hindsight, they should have added a centre-back in the summer itself. There is good news and bad news on that front.
Let's start with the good news, shall we? As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have been in active talks since the start of the week to get a new centre back in January, an important immediate addition.
'Active talks' - Fabrizio Romano confirms superb Chelsea transfer news
Most fans will love that update. So, what is the bad news? Well, even though Chelsea have changed their stance on the need for a centre-back, they have not made a change to their recruitment strategy.
The centre-backs Chelsea are being linked with are unproven youngsters. The club's stubbornness in overlooking experience for potential is what has gotten them to this point, where, despite spending over a billion pounds, they do not even have a team capable of qualifying for the Champions League every year.
There have been some positives here and there. The likes of Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo and a few others have met their potential. But there is no way you can consider this to be a successful transfer strategy. Unsurprisingly, the fans have turned on the ownership and the sporting directors already.
