Ally McCoist has been discussing the future of Liam Rosenior, who is coming under serious pressure after a rotten run of Chelsea form. The Blues fell short at home to Manchester United on Saturday, missing a host of chances and seeing their Champions League qualification hopes dashed.
The result made it four straight Premier League defeats, and serious questions are now being asked of Rosenior as he prepares his team for a Tuesday night Premier League date with Brighton and this weekend's FA Cup semi-final with Leeds United on Sunday.
It would be a bold move for Chelsea to Rosenior this early in his reign, and indeed with such a small chunk of the season remaining, meaning it will be tricky to find a replacement, and indeed a replacement who can have any kind of impact.
But the Blues are slipping and fast, and that could lead to action being taken by the board, especially if the team fall out of the European spots altogether, which is on the cards this week.
Ally McCoist says the quiet part out loud about Liam Rosenior
According to TalkSport pundit Ally McCoist, the FA Cup could be keeping Rosenior in the job, and defeat this weekend could lead to a decision being made.
“I feel for Liam Rosenior. I feel the FA Cup is keeping him in a job," said McCoist. “If they were to lose to Leeds, I would fear for him, but it’s an incredibly difficult situation.
“But one thing that worries me is that they haven’t got a massive number of injuries, but I am looking at the squad that has been assembled there and how poor it is and wondering could Chelsea be next season’s Tottenham?”
That's a scary thought, even if it is an unrealistic one given the strength of Chelsea's squad compared to Tottenham's. Rosenior is well aware of the pressure he is facing, but he says the club bosses remain firmly beind him.
Asked if he has their support, he responded: "100 per cent. They’ve been supportive of me in our daily conversations, the sporting directors involved - they’ve been magnificent in their support of me and the team.
"We’re aligned that we know we need to win games of football now. That doesn’t go against what we’re trying to do, which is to give consistent success to this club long term."
This could be a decisive week for Chelsea in that Sunday could see their hopes of winning silverware kept alive or dashed, but before then, they face Brighton in a vital game in the race for Europe, with just one point separating the two sides.
