Calum McFarlane reveals Joao Pedro and Levi Colwill's chances of Sunderland returns

Calum McFarlane is hopeful Joao Pedro and Levi Colwill will both be fit enough to play Chelsea's final Premier League game of the season against Sunderland on Sunday.

The Blues will travel north to take on Regis Le Bris' in form Black Cats as they look to take all three points and give themselves a chance of qualifying for European football next season.

And McFarlane, who will also be making his final appearance ahead of Xabi Alonso's arrival, is hopeful he'll have two of his best players to pick from.

Calum McFarlane gives Joao Pedro and Levi Colwill injury update

Both Pedro and Colwill missed out for Chelsea's 2-1 win over Spurs earlier this week. The pair were not part of the Blues' matchday squad due to a lack of fitness.

There is great expectation both will feature — possibly start — against Sunderland this weekend, though.

Speaking to Football London reporters ahead of the clash, McFarlane revealed that both players trained on Friday.

"They both trained today. Both promising and we're hopeful they'll be fit for Sunday.

Pedro's suspected return will allow him the chance to add to his already-impressive 20-goal tally this season. Despite failing to make Carlo Ancelotti's final 26-man Brazil squad, Pedro will be fully focused on finishing the season off as strongly as possible.

As for Colwill, his omission from the squad against Spurs shouldn't have been a surprise. The centre-back has only recently returned from a near-season-ending ACL injury, so managing his playing time has been paramount.

A win against Sunderland would see Chelsea move to seventh in the table.

Chance to impress before Xabi Alonso takes charge

Sunday's match is more than just the side's final Premier League game of the season. For many, it will be their last chance to impress before Alonso takes over.

Several players are facing uncertain futures this summer with many of them linked with moves away. Enzo Fernandez remains heavily linked to Real Madrid with Marc Cucurella on Manchester City's radar.

Liam Delap and Alejandro Garnacho are both outsiders to be part of the core squad next season. The pair have had disappointing opening campaigns in West London following their transfers from Ipswich and Manchester United, respectively.

Filip Jorgensen is another who may fall out of favour from the end of the season.

The 24-year-old is unlikely to play a big part under Alonso, who is expected to bring in a new number one. And coincidently, the name at the top of the Spaniard's shortlist is thought to be none other than Sunderland's Robin Roefs.
