Chelsea were dumped out of the Champions League on Tuesday night after losing 8-2 on aggregate to holders PSG.
Liam Rosenior had several injury problems to contend with before the match but there can be no excuses for what was another poor display.
The Blues were outfought and outclassed in both legs leaving their season's hopes pinned on the FA Cup and finishing inside the Premier League's top four.
However, regardless of how this season ends, Chelsea's squad could look very different by the time the summer transfer window closes later this year.
Enzo Fernandez admits Chelsea future in doubt
Enzo Fernandez is one of the club's most high profile players. His then-record £106.8 million move to Stamford Bridge in 2023 came off the back of winning the World Cup with Argentina.
The 25-year-old has since proven himself capable of competing in the notoriously tough Premier League.
However, although the South American still has six years left on his contract, Fernandez's Chelsea future has been cast into doubt.
After being linked with a move away from London, the midfielder, who spoke to ESPN after defeat to PSG, as quoted by BBC Sport, confirmed he 'doesn't know' if he'll continue with the Blues beyond this campaign.
"I don't know, there are eight games left and the FA Cup. There's the World Cup and then we'll see.
"
Fernandez's surprise admission couldn't have come at a worse time for Rosenior, who must now find a way to refocus his players as they prepare for their final eight league matches.
Chelsea will demand huge transfer fee for Fernandez
Having paid well over £100 million for Fernandez three years ago, Chelsea are determined not to lose money on the midfielder.
It goes without saying that a valuation that high limits how many clubs could realistically afford the Chelsea number eight.
And according to talkSPORT's Ben Jacobs, Fernandez may have even fewer options due to his unwillingness to move to the wealthy Saudi Pro League.
Real Madrid and PSG are the other obvious potential destinations but Jacobs believes there is little interest from last night's victors to pursue the former Benfica ace.
Chelsea will not feel overly concerned by suggestions Fernandez could move on. He is tied into a mammoth contract that puts the Blues firmly in the driving seat when it comes to any sort of negotiations.
If a club really does want to sign Fernandez, they're going to have the break the bank, and that may not be such a bad thing considering how many new additions the side needs.
