This summer could be one of change for Chelsea. Plenty of players are believed to be on their radar as the club look to make a memorable return to the Champions League. But at the same time, there are many who could be heading for the Stamford Bridge exit door as well. One such name is Djordje Petrovic.
Petrovic played a decent bit of first-team football under the management of Mauricio Pochettino. But last summer, he was sent out on loan to Strasbourg.
Petrovic did brilliantly there and won Strasbourg's Player of the Season award. Now, he is looking to be assured of a starting spot. It looks like Chelsea are not ready to do that. So, an exit might be on the cards, which is why he did not join the team at the Club World Cup.
As reported by The Athletic, there is a gentleman’s agreement between Chelsea and Petrovic that he can leave if someone bids £25 million. He has been given the green light to find a club that will meet that figure.
Chelsea agree to let 25-year-old goalkeeper leave for £25m bid
Petrovic might have a tough time finding suitors who are ready to shell out that sort of a fee to sign him. Yes, in the modern-day market, that is not a huge figure. But recently, we did see Caoimhin Kelleher move for £18 million package. He is a Premier League-proven keeper.
The same cannot be said about Petrovic. He has had one good season, but that was in Ligue 1. And we rarely see French clubs splash out those sort of transfer fees, other than PSG.
There are many Chelsea fans who believe Petrovic should be the starter in goal. But that does not seem to be the plan. The Blues might try to sign another goalkeeper and made offers for Mike Maignan before the Club World Cup.
