The Blues are short on midfielders after selling Enzo Fernandez on deadline day. Letting him go to Manchester City suited all parties, as the player had been angling for a move away from Stamford Bridge for some time. On deadline day, the Blues tried to sign Lamine Camara late on. However, a move for the AS Monaco midfielder fell through. There could be better options than Camara in January, and that could be a certain AFC Bournemouth player.
TEAMtalk has reported "Chelsea are understood to be in a strong position to land Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott, with sources stating the club have made fresh moves ahead of a potential January transfer."
Overall, Chelsea had a good transfer window. They were able to appoint Alonso, who may have ended up back at Liverpool had the Reds moved on from Arne Slot more quickly. The Blues also let go of bad eggs such as Fernandez.
Alex Scott is the missing piece in Chelsea's lineup
Chelsea signed Morgan Rogers for £117 million after Arsenal balked at the price that Aston Villa were asking for. Experienced players such as Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck arrived, which will give some much-needed leadership to this young Chelsea squad.
Henderson is still suffering from a forearm fracture after injuring himself by falling over an advertising board after England defeated Mexico at the World Cup. Moises Caicedo is also injured, which has left the Blues short on midfield options. Romeo Lavia partnered Reece James against Arsenal. However, when Lavia came off, the Blues had two natural full-backs in midfield, as Malo Gusto was then playing alongside James.
Scott is a long-term target for Chelsea, and he is continuing to star for Bournemouth. He already has one goal and an assist in three Premier League games this season. As another defensive midfielder, he should be able to fit in nicely in Alonso's 3-4-2-1 formation. Scott is also only 23, but already a proven Premier League midfielder.
Many were tipping Chelsea to win the Premier League this season. They have had an influx of quality players and appointed a top manager. Also, as the Blues have no European football, they can solely focus on domestic commitments. However, they will need a boost in midfield in January, and that is why they must push to sign Scott.
