Chelsea have made it a habit of signing youngsters from all around the globe since their change in ownership. In fact, many feel that they have relied on this strategy far too much and overlooked the importance of experience and proven quality, something that has affected their performances and results.
For good or for bad, it looks like Chelsea have no interest in taking the criticism on board and changing their ways. Now, it looks like they are closing in on a move for an English defender who was released by Preston North End.
As reported by EFL Analysis, Kian Best has held talks with Chelsea and is close to agreeing a deal. The Blues are pushing ahead with a move and the player is close to finalising a move to Stamford Bridge.
The expectation is that Best will become a part of Chelsea's youth ranks. But considering the ties with Strasbourg, he could be sent out on loan to the Ligue 1 side as well.
Chelsea close to signing English defender for free
This has to go down as one of Chelsea's most confusing moves in recent times. A player released by Preston North End, who finished 20th in the Championship last season, ends up joining the Blues.
It does feel like we are missing something in this entire saga though. It has been claimed that Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United had shown interest in signing Best as well. So, why would Preston North End release him?
He can play as a left-back and a centre-back. Overall, he made 17 appearances for Preston North End. Best was sent out on loan to Bohemians in the second half of last season but made only a solitary appearance for them. Also, he has played five times for England at the U19 level.
