Chelsea have had some mixed luck signing players from Manchester City in recent years. Cole Palmer was brought in with low expectations and has managed to establish himself as the face of the club. On the other hand, Raheem Sterling was the new ownership's marquee signing in their first summer transfer window and it quite clearly did not work out.
The Manchester City effect is quite clearly visible in this Chelsea project though. It is not just about Palmer and Sterling. Enzo Maresca, although brought in from Leicester City, was part of Pep Guardiola's backroom team not too long ago. The likes of Tosin Adarabioyo, Romeo Lavia, Jamie Gittens and Liam Delap came through their academy.
Now, it looks like Chelsea are interested in another Manchester City player. But the Citizens do not seem too keen on the idea.
As reported by Manchester City News, Chelsea have enquired about signing Rico Lewis. Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Newcastle United have all expressed interest too.
Chelsea enquire about signing Manchester City player
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Lewis. He is one of Manchester City's most talented players and one would imagine the club would not be too keen to sign him join Chelsea, especially after how things have turned out for Palmer at Stamford Bridge.
Lewis is primarily a right-back. But he can play in a variety of roles. Chelsea already have a similar profile with Josh Acheampong though. It might be a good idea to see what he is truly capable of before setting eyes elsewhere.
Acheampong has impressed whenever given a chance. Many fans believe that following Levi Colwill's recent injury, it is time to had him a bigger role in the first-team plans. Let's see how Enzo Maresca ends up handling his development this season.
