Over the past several weeks, Chelsea have not completed any signings. Instead, their focus seems to have been on parting ways with their current crop of players in order to free up space in the squad and make more funds available. We have seen quite a few head for the exit door as a result, including players like Renato Veigo, Carney Chukwuemeka, Armando Broja and Lesley Ugochukwu. Now, the time might have finally come to add to the roster.
Rumours have recently cropped up about a potential move for Fermin Lopez. But it is Alejandro Garnacho who seems to be the one closing in on a move to Stamford Bridge.
As reported by ESPN, Chelsea are closing in on a deal for Garnacho of Manchester United. Talks have resumed between the two clubs over a transfer worth between £35 million and £40 million, however, no agreement has yet been reached. Negotiations are progressing and a move could be finalised before the deadline.
Initially, it had looked like Chelsea were not ready to pay more than £30 million while Manchester United wanted about £50 million. But now, it appears that some middle ground could be reached between the two parties.
Chelsea finally close to completing £40 million signing
Of course, there are plenty of question marks around Garnacho. Not just on the pitch but off it as well. But all things said, there is no doubt that he has tremendous talent and the unique ability to make something out of nothing.
If he can even get close to reaching his potential, the transfer fee will look like a bargain in the future. Now, let's see if a deal ends up materialising or not.
Signing Garnacho makes sense for Chelsea as well. Jamie Gittens was signed earlier in the summer but from what we have seen so far, and admittedly, it is a very small sample size, he is not ready to be starting for the Blues at this point. The Argentine at least brings Premier League-proven quality to the table.
