Chelsea are set to make their long-awaited return to the Champions League after a two-year absence from Europe's elite competition. But the Blues are set to be handed one of the toughest 'welcome back' games on the continent as they will make the trip to the Allianz Arena to face Bayern Munich.

Of course, Chelsea do have a history with this fixture. They defeated Bayern Munich in their own backyard to win their first Champions League title back on May 19, 2012. A lot less is riding on the result of this contest, but the Blues will want to kick-off their campaign with all three points nonetheless.

The Blues have been forced to make a change to their Champions League squad before the game though. It is a result of Dario Essugo's recent injury while away on international duty, which required him to undergo surgery. He might not be back in 2025.

As reported by Ben Jacobs, Facundo Buonanotte is included in Chelsea’s Champions League squad, replacing Essugo. New UEFA rules allow for the replacement of a long-term injury.

Buonanotte did make his Chelsea debut recently, in the game against Brentford. And although his performance has divided the opinion of the supporters, we feel that he was one of the bright sparks for the Blues in the first half.

Of course, we all know that Buonanotte will be a backup option to Cole Palmer, when the Englishman is fit and available. But that does not mean that he could not make an important contribution to Chelsea's cause in the Champions League.

A lot had been made about his exclusion from the Champions League squad, days after being signed on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion. Well, after a few twists and turns, he now finds himself in it. Let's see how he does.
