In the Club World Cup final, Robert Sanchez put in arguably his best, certainly most important, performance in a Chelsea shirt. The Spaniard pulled off some brilliant saves and kept a clean sheet. But then, there was a glimpse of what frustrates the fans at the same time, as he made a mess of things with the ball at his feet late in the game. Thankfully, it was his day and PSG could not take advantage of the error.
Sanchez has everything to be one of the top goalkeepers in the world. He is a brilliant shotstopper who can pull off those special saves that only a select few goalies can. We saw one in the final against PSG. He is also a commanding presence in the box.
That being said, Sanchez is error-prone and inconsistent. He can be brilliant one game and the reason for dropping points the next. Perhaps Chelsea need someone more realible in goal if they want to challenge for the top prizes on a regular basis.
That is what has seen Chelsea being linked with Gianluigi Donnarumma, who conceded three goals on Sunday. But even in the midst of a heavy defeat, he was able to show his class, pulling off two brilliant saves from Liam Delap. There is little he could have done about Cole Palmer's brace or Joao Pedro's sensational chip.
Chelsea tipped for Gianluigi Donnarumma swap deal with PSG
3 Added Minutes have suggested the idea of a swap deal between Chelsea and PSG. It would see Donnarumma head to Stamford Bridge while Christopher Nkunku would head back to his former club.
For those who have forgotten, Nkunku came through the youth ranks at PSG and made 78 senior appearances for the club before joining RB Leipzig, which is where he became a household name. In recent times, the French champions have been linked with a move for the forward, who has failed to establish himself at Chelsea and looks almost certain to leave this summer.
Of course, it would be somewhat of a surprise if PSG part ways with Donnarumma. The only reason behind such a move would be if the Italian makes it clear that he wants to leave and won't sign a new contract with the club.
But then, what would such a move mean for Sanchez? Did the Spaniard do enough in the final to convince Enzo Maresca that he deserves to start another season as their number one?
