Chelsea have already been very active in the summer transfer window.
The Blues recently reached an agreement to sell Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid for £47.5 million. The left-back will join up with Los Blancos shortly after Spain's World Cup campaign comes to an end.
The 27-year-old was the first Chelsea player out the door and young striker Jimmy-Jay Morgan looks to be the second. The 20-year-old is in advanced talks to join Championship side West Brom in a permanent deal.
However, while Morgan moving on is not unexpected with his contract expiring next year and no clear path to first team football, Cucurella's situation was very different, and recent reports claim Xabi Alonso was kept in the dark.
Xabi Alonso unaware Chelsea agreed to sell Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid
Alonso will take charge of the Blues from July 1. His appointment sent a major signal of intent from the owners, especially naming him 'Manager' — something his predecessors didn't boast.
However, despite Alonso's global reputation as one of Europe's best managers, according to Madrid Zone (via TEAMtalk), Chelsea's owners opted against keeping the 44-year-old in the loop with Cucurella's sale.
The Spanish outlet claim Alonso only became aware of Cucurella's agreed move to Madrid after seeing social media posts from journalists Fabrizio Romano and Matteo Morreto.
It remains unknown how Alonso felt finding out this out, but it probably wouldn't have been great...
BlueCo risk upsetting Alonso already
Alonso knew the size of the job when he took it, and he knew how Chelsea's hierarchy, which includes multiple sporting directors, but he may not have been expecting to be overlooked so significantly, and so quickly.
The former Bayer Leverkusen boss has yet to take charge officially, but his first season's success will largely depend on what the club do in the transfer window.
Even though Cucurella's agreement with Real Madrid was reached at breakneck speed, Alonso still should have been kept in the loop, even if there was nothing he could do to stop the full-back leaving.
With BlueCo opting to conduct their business without the input of their new manager, fans have every right to feel concerned.
These latest reports suggest BlueCo only promised Alonso such a large say in signings as a way to get him to agree to take the job.
Of course, this may not be the case at all, but it's hard to come to any other conclusion when the manager didn't have a clue that one of his team's best players had left.
