Enzo Fernandez's extra-time equaliser helped manager-less Chelsea take a point back to London from a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Manchester City. Tijjani Reijnders appeared to have sealed victory for the Citizens, but the Argentine's late goal kept the Blues from beginning their post-Enzo Maresca era with a loss. As a result, they remained fifth in the Premier League table and in contention for a Champions League spot.

We're well into the January transfer window, but Chelsea have been rather quiet in terms of in and out transfers. But it looks like the Blues' recruitment team are already identifying proven Premier League midfielders who could bolster the team's spine in the coming seasons.

According to Football Insider, Chelsea are closely monitoring Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali. They have a firm interest in the 25-year-old.

However, Chelsea's interest is focused on the summer of 2026 rather than this January window, with the club looking for established Premier League midfielders who could improve their team in the long run. Tonali fits that description.

Chelsea interested in brilliant Newcastle United player

Tonali left AC Milan for Newcastle United in the summer of 2023, but in October of the same year, he was given a ten-month ban from football. However, since making a comeback in August 2024, he has re-established himself as a vital member of the team and become one of the best central midfielders in the Premier League. In total, he has appeared 84 times for Eddie Howe's team in all competitions, scoring 7 goals and providing 7 assists.

Chelsea needs to improve their midfield depth in particular. Although Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo, and Fernandez make a formidable trio, there are concerns regarding the reliability of the alternatives. Andrey Santos is seen as a developing player, while Romeo Lavia's injuries pose a long-term concern. Therefore, Tonali becomes a key contender for the Blues due to his Premier League experience and consistency this season.

Newcastle United, on the other hand, are expected to be hoping to keep Tonali. Furthermore, the Italian international has a contract with the Magpies until the summer of 2029. That has not always stopped players from leaving the club though. Just ask Alexander Isak.
